Boys Club Staff 2009 - 2010
Lead Coach - Matt Schutz
Matt is a teacher and head coach of both the boys and girls volleyball programs at Harbor High School. In his first year at the school, Matt guided the boys to their first SCCAL league championship since 2000 and a berth in the quarterfinals of CCS. He also assisted with the SCCAL champion, CCS runner-up, and NorCal quarterfinalist girls team last fall. Over the summer Matt joined the Bay-to-Bay club coaching their 14-1 team to a 9th place finish at the Junior Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.
Before moving back to Santa Cruz, Matt assisted for legendary coach Dan Glenn at Southern California high school power Newport Harbor. During his tenure at Newport Harbor the Sailor boys won a Southern Section Championship (1999) and were Southern Section finalists twice (2000, 2008). His time with the Newport girls program resulted in a division 1 state title (1999) and two Section Section Championships (1999 and 2003.) He has also been involved with the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club since 1987, first as a player and more recently as a coach, leading successful finishes at four separate Junior Olympics.
As a player, Matt set the UCSC Banana Slugs for two years before concentrating on his studies. In addition to his BA in Marine Biology, Matt holds a teaching credential and Masters from UC Irvine. He has been teaching science for 9 years.
Tyler Hinz
Longtime Santa Cruz volleyball talent Tyler Hinz will lead the 16 and under group this summer. As a player Tyler was selected 2007 ACVA Division III player of the week as an outside hitter at UC Santa Cruz. That year he led the Banana Slugs to the Molten Division III Final Four. Tyler is an accomplished beach player and avid Cross-Fit athlete. HIs coaching experience includes stints with Bay to Bay Volleyball Club and Branciforte Middle School. Tyler is finishing up a law degree at Santa Clara University.
Rick Schroeder
Rick has coaching experience at both the high school and club level, working with both boy's and girl's teams. He has coached for both the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club (boys) and Orange County Volleyball Club (girls), most recently working with the Main Beach 15 and under team which finished 7th in the 16 and under Power League Finals. Rick's playing career continues at UC Santa Cruz where he has helped the Slugs advance to the Molten Division III title game this season. He is majoring in sociology and hopes to complete his degree in June 2011.
