Boys Club Staff 2010 - 2011
Matt Schutz - Boys Director
Matt is a teacher and head coach of both the boys and girls volleyball programs at Harbor High School. This past fall the Harbor girls team advanced to the CCS Semifinals for their best showing in three years. In his first year at the school, Matt guided the boys to their first SCCAL league championship since 2000 and a berth in the quarterfinals of the CCS playoffs. He also assisted with the SCCAL champion, CCS runner-up, and NorCal quarterfinalist girls team. This is the third year he has run the boys Main Beach club.
Before moving back to Santa Cruz, Matt assisted for legendary coach Dan Glenn at Southern California high school power Newport Harbor. During his tenure at Newport Harbor the Sailor boys won a Southern Section Championship (1999) and were Southern Section finalists twice (2000, 2008). His time with the Newport girls program resulted in a division 1 state title (1999) and two Section Section Championships (1999 and 2003.) He has also been involved with the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club since 1987, first as a player and more recently as a coach, leading successful finishes at four separate Junior Olympics.
As a player, Matt set the UCSC Banana Slugs for two years before concentrating on his studies. In addition to his BA in Marine Biology, Matt holds a teaching credential and Masters from UC Irvine. He has been teaching science for 10 years.
Rick Schroeder - 16 Gold
Rick returns for his third season with Main Beach. He has coaching experience at both the high school and club level, working with both boy's and girl's teams. He has coached for both the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club (boys) and Orange County Volleyball Club (girls), most recently working with the Main Beach 16 and under team which concluded a successful fall seaon in the NCVA Power League. His Orange County 16's team earned a bronze medal at the 2009 Volleyball Festival.
Rick's playing career concluded at UC Santa Cruz where he has helped the Slugs advance to the Molten Division III title game last season. Previously he hit in the middle for Orange Coast College where the Pirates made the state finals match in his sophomore year, earning all-state honors. His high school career included a trip to the CIF Southern Section semi-finals with Woodbridge High School in Irvine and a 16 and under silver medal with the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club. He is majoring in sociology and hopes to complete his degree in the spring of 2012.
Rick is currently the head boys volleyball coach at Soquel High School.
Darren Tsai - 18 Gold
Darren is coaching his forth season of volleyball and will be returning for his second season at Main Beach. This fall his 18's team completed a successful run in the NCVA Power League and are looking forward to the summer season. He has previously assisted the 14 and under for Surf City Volleyball Club in Huntington Beach and last year coached the Mountain View Volleyball Club 15 and under team to a successful Junior National tournament.
He currently is a senior at UC Santa Cruz where he is majoring in business and minoring in education. Darren is one of the starting liberos on the Slug men's team and competed in high school for Edison High in Huntington Beach where the Chargers won the CIF Southern Section title during his junior season.
